Fire Protection (EIT)
Fire protection engineers must be able to analyze problems and find solutions.
They need
creativity and the ability to work with and communicate their ideas to others.
FP work
includes thorough examination of building designs before, during, and after
construction.
The fire protection and life safety analysis considers fire resistance, building
usage
and/or contents, water supplies, egress, and other factors. As an FP EIT for Leo
A Daly,
you will assist multiple teams of architects and engineers throughout facility
design for
private and public organizations to safeguard life and property against fire,
explosion,
and related hazards. You also will design and recommend materials or equipment,
such as
structural components protection, fire-detection equipment, alarm systems, fire
extinguishing devices and systems, height/area calculations, and egress modeling
and the
necessary materials, equipment, and methods for alleviation of conditions
conducive to
fire.
Responsibilities
· Utilizes sound engineering judgment and experience in developing
appropriate
engineering solutions, recommendations and designs.
· Stays knowledgeable of the current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
standards including the Life Safety Code (101) and national building and fire codes
(Uniform, International, etc.).
· Competently evaluates both existing building construction and tentative new
building designs for identifying fire/life safety deficiencies, necessary fire prevention,
protection, detection, and suppression requirements for architectural, mechanical plumbing
and electrical designs, as well as design equivalency comparisons.
· Shows an understanding of stairwell pressurization mechanical systems, atrium smoke
control/evacuation mechanical systems, and high-rise building smoke control designs and
control sequences for related mechanical systems.
· Provides a working knowledge of fire/smoke detection and alarm systems, including
incipient stage smoke detection and alarm systems.
· Possesses design competency in wet pipe, dry pipe, and pre-action automatic fire
sprinkler suppression systems, as well as clean agent total flooding suppression systems
(FM200, FE25, Inergen, NOVEC, etc.) and fire alarm/mass notification systems.
· Establishes basis of design for necessary fire protection systems and prepares
complete specifications, technical studies and reports.
· Performs hydraulic calculations, selects fire protection system equipment, and
develops layouts for piping, heads, and nozzles.
· Designs and assists in the production of documents as needed to meet project
schedules. Provides Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) reviews for architectural and
engineering discipline documents to identify areas of conflict with all disciplines, as
well as deficiencies in fire protection engineering design.
· Participates in prospective new client shortlist interviews, existing client
in-progress review meetings, and construction administration project phases by processing
shop drawings, responding to RFI’s, and performing site visits during the
construction phase.
· Monitors and tracks project progress.
· Coordinates with architects, interior designers, team engineers (mechanical,
electrical, structural, and civil) and specialty sub-consultants.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering.
· Fire Protection EIT designation a plus but not required.
· Experience in fire suppression, detection, and/or notification systems design.
