JOB OVERVIEW

GENERAL PURPOSE
Work under the general direction of the Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) Director or designee performing complex professional and supervisory duties while overseeing the daily operation of the Day School so as to promote and secure the achievement of its pupils. Day school is a Rule 18 Interim Program accredited by the Nebraska Department of Education
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Provide direct, daily supervision of the Teaching staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Fulfill the responsibilities of teaching as defined in Nebraska State law, and follow the Code of Ethics adopted by the Nebraska State Board of Education.
Effectively apply professional competencies to meet the minimum standards as adopted by the Nebraska State Board of Education.
Learn, apply, and follow all policies, rules, regulations, and directives of the Sarpy County Juvenile Justice Center (JJC).
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives for the juvenile and correctional community, coworkers, residents, and the general public.
Supervise the academic integration with the youth's home school and exchange information to provide an appropriate school program to ensure a smooth transition back to the home school.
Arrange for homework to be provided, picked-up, and returned.
Establish curriculum based on the youth's current courses.
Arrange for recovery of credit, if necessary.
Provide the school with a transcript of completed courses or a written report on youth's accomplishments and a grade to date if coursework provided.
Communicate with families/legal guardians, school staff, case workers, and probation officers regarding the youth's progress.
Coordinate education progress of released youth with their home school and any new placement location when youth is released from detention. 
Coordinate the teaching objectives, materials, teaching methods, and means of assessment to be used by each teacher as well as maintain records relating to standardized test scores and course grades.
Arrange for evaluation of youth's academic levels, when necessary.
Provide teachers with school information regarding school work for which youth are responsible to complete.
Discuss with teachers the youth's progress and any academic issues.
Coordinate with youth's home district and the Nebraska Department of Education to oversee the administration of the Statewide Assessments for detained youth and those enrolled in Sarpy County Educational Program (SCEP) and Day Reporting Center (DRC).
Provide period reports regarding general programs, activities, and school issues to the Director and Coordinator of Programs of the JJC.
Serve as a visible presence in all areas of the school.
Resolve routine and unique problems as they arise.
Direct the day-to-day activities of the school's instructional team.
Provide academic guidance to youth.
Oversee the grading and reporting of standards and methods used by teachers.
Prepare a master school schedule, including a yearly school calendar as well as a daily schedule.
Assist with youth academic testing and progress reports for court.
Ensure legal compliance with government regulations as well as agency requirements, and maintain the educational standards established by the State of Nebraska and by those agencies required to examine and approve the school.
Develop course curriculum in the four core areas based on State Standards.
Review course materials and recommend the purchase of such to maintain compatibility with State and Sarpy School District standards and curriculum.
Review and maintain the online course offerings.
Maintain records of attendance and demographic information for the Nebraska Department of Education and the Papillion La Vista School District as required for Title 1 funding purposes.
Understand and enforce the rules, regulations, and rights of youth regarding Special Education and 504 protections through coordination with the youth's school district.
Prepare the information regarding reimbursement for snacks from the state.
Research new topic areas and maintain current subject knowledge.
Participate in departmental meetings and attend JJC training events.
Perform the duties of JJC Teacher, as necessary.
Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.
Respond to emergencies including, but not limited to, fire, medical, and security; and follow established policies and procedures.

Considerable knowledge of principles and techniques of basic education and Special Education
Knowledge of management principles and practices
Skill in composing clear, concise written documentation
Ability to exercise objective, independent judgment and discretion
Ability to plan and organize a schedule, set priorities, and meet deadlines
Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing
Ability to work independently and efficiently while managing stressful situations and frequent interruptions
Ability to handle and maintain confidential and sensitive information including, but not limited to, juveniles' medical information/records, department communication and documents, and other similar information
Ability to understand and follow exacting verbal or written direction
Ability to operate standard office equipment such as a computer with Microsoft Office and specialized software, multiline phone, copier, scanner, fax, calculator, and law enforcement radio
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience 
Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education from an accredited university or college. 7-12th grade endorsement preferred . 
Must have a minimum of two (2) years of teaching experience.
Must possess a current and active Nebraska Educator’s Certification
 
Special Requirements
Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Driver's License, own mode of transportation, as well as meet eligibility requirements of "acceptable driver standards" as defined by the County.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands and working environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is performed indoors in a secure detention facility.  Incumbents may be exposed to infectious/communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and potential risk of injury from distraught juveniles.  Noise levels are typically moderate but at times could be extreme.
 
Work requires physical activity including frequent periods of sitting/remaining stationary and walking/moving about as well as occasional standing/remaining upright, bending, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.  The employee must occasionally lift, maneuver, and/or move up to 10 pounds.  The incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate/manipulate equipment (use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects/tools).
 
Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing, speech, smell, and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close and color vision as well as the ability to adjust focus.  Communication abilities include the ability to talk (verbal exchange) and hear within normal ranges.
